Task 2b: The Journal Writing Experience

I had to have a bit of time to elaborate this task. I didn't feel really comfortable with some of the methods and had to take time to write them. But it was interesting to do this task in a week that I had so many challenges and deep reflections. I believe each one of the methods helped me to understand what is going on with me and around me.

Description

I believe this is the method that I use less at my diaries. I usually don’t describe my day, instead I usually write down my reflections from a specific event or from an overview of my life at the moment. I have the feeling that if I am writing to myself, I don’t need to describe what I did as I know it. So I had to pretend that I was writing to someone else. For example: “Today we had class at ten and all of us were feeling tired from the dress rehearsal in the night before. The class was an hour fifteen and after, we had corrections from last night. One of the boys got injured and someone else had to jump in to his place and we needed to go through all spacing.  We finished at two; I stretched a lot as I am feeling really sore, took a good shower and went home, to rest for the next dress rehearsal which will be at night at seven o’clock”

Although, I have to recognize that description is good to analyse routines, methods of work, diets, work out planning’s etc. I have already done that and helped me to find the best way to organize my routine.

Initial Reflection

For this one, I wrote like a question and answer test. I really enjoyed doing this type and I kept doing it for the other days. As I wrote before, I like to reflect about specific events and those questions helped me to understand them better and even realize about news feelings.

Premiere Show:

What did you fell about it?
Satisfied, relieved and happy. And all those feelings came across especially at the bow in the end of the show.

What were you thinking?
That more than everything I wanted to dance well for me, to make me happy. More than to please someone, to my reputation or to prove something to someone. If any of those things happen, are consequences of my work. I wanted to enjoy myself after so much hard work and dedication.

Did anything unexpected happen?
No, and I was quite happy about it. Didn't want surprises or adventures at a Premiere!

What was your mood?
I was really tired and overwhelmed after two weeks of full rehearsals in the mornings and nights and no free days. But lights, costumes, make up and stage have a magic that brings you so much energy and happiness and you forget all the sore muscles. And always grateful to be here.

List

I love making lists. I make lists for everything: shopping, tasks, priorities, corrections… But I never wrote them like a diary though. This method helped me during my writing, to organize things that came through my mind but I don’t find useful for a more deep reflection. Maybe, is a good way to conclude a whole thought, after reflecting and writing about it. For example, a list of conclusions that you took from an experience, your next steps, your next goals etc.

Evaluation

For this one, once more like the “Initial Reflection”, I did like a little answer and question test for myself. This method I found really useful to reflect and criticize about my own work. To realize what I did well, what I need to improve, what I learnt. This is how I did when I wrote:

First Dress Rehearsal Monday

What did you think went well?
I got less disorientated with the lights than I expected. The steps went well and the costumes didn't affect me as well.

What worked?
Especially the beginning of the first act and the third act, the choreography worked well with the lighting and the size of the stage. Some things that I tried for my acting also worked.

Did you learn anything, discover anything, and notice things to avoid?
I learned that you shouldn't be addicted to the musicality from the CD. Once you are with an orchestra, they can go faster or slower and you need to keep the ears alert and follow their musicality.
I discover that the size and type of floor of the stage made me much more tired. The lights made me sweat a lot and my make-up was going off. I should always have lots of water, a towel and make up with me.

What if?

This one was hard to me as well. And I think it can be a bit dangerous, because can make you create expectations that will disappoint you after. I think is better to reflect to what actually happened. Although it can also make you realize and give a value to your current situation and maybe, make you think like “if I wanted this to happen what should I have done?” I did this to myself and I felt constructive. I felt I recognized what I could have done to make a certain situation better and also see how well something happened. For example I would hate if on this week I have got a serious injury, illness or simple have not done a good job in the show.

Another view

This one made me remember a book that my parents gave to me and my sister. The book was about fairy tales described from different perspectives, from different characters. For example, the story of the “Red Riding Hood” from the point of view of the bad wolf. He could think “who is the mother that let a small kid walk alone through a dangerous forest?” The book was really nice made me want to see it again when I am back home. I think my parents wanted to show me that sometimes we need to see our situation from outside to recognize better if we are wrong , what could we do to make it better , what is the situation really about.

So, I tried to write about my day from the perspective from the pianist of the company. I thought it was a good idea, as he see everything that is happening but is not totally part of it. He watches our classes, rehearsals, discussions etc. It was hard because I can’t read his mind and be sure if what I am writing is right, but it felt I was writing about a person looking at a painting at an exposition. Like I said, I have to imagine what the other one is thinking so is not realistic, but made me realize that we can be a bit selfish with our conclusions if we see them just from our perspective.

Graphs , Charts and Diagrams

Like the “List” method, I never used a graph, or a chart or a diagram at a diary. I used to use one of those tools for studies for my academic subjects. To be able to do this task, I used the idea from the Module 1 Handbook, I compared my last year dress rehearsals (for my dance school) to the ones that I had this week, at a professional company.

Task 2a: Reflective Practice

Before writing about my first feeling on keeping a diary, I have to say that since I read the Reader 2, began to think about reflective practice and different processes of learning and began writing on my diary, I had a quite brainstorm. If I was an introspective and reflective person, I am even more now.

When I was a kid, I used to always take a notebook to my holidays trips with my friends or family. My family always loved travelling and we used to visit many cool places. I used to write every day religiously, being extremely careful to don’t forget any detail. I used to also love to make lists of the most amazing places that we went, most amazing stories, most amazing restaurants… this habit of lists I keep until nowadays; I make lists for everything. When I read about our next task, I remembered how I loved to keep journals and how I lost this habit. After that, I remember that at my first year leaving away from home when I went to the Harid Conservatory in the USA, I used also to write every day. During this period, when everything became so different to me and I began to suffer a bit with the language barrier, writing was my therapy and best friend.

The last few years, I didn't keep a diary but didn't lose the habit to write so much. I always felt that putting my feelings, corrections, tasks in a paper made my mind clear and also helped me to cool down.  Coming back to it now is being interesting. Like before, to write became a therapy. In the past few days I have been through so many challenges and thoughts about my work environment, my identity and my next goals for the future. More than a description of my day, I am reflecting about my routine and what I feel and see. And is interesting to come back and read my notes. I am trying to associate to what I read on Reader 2, and analyse and discover my way of learning and reflecting. Like I said in the beginning…is being a brainstorm!

Skype Session

On the last Tuesday, the 11th of February, I took part on the Skype group session with Adesola. I finished my rehearsal, ran home, arrived a bit late, but I made it.

I asked some questions and heard about the experience of a student who is currently on Module 2. It was great to hear how Module 1 was to her. Made me feel more secure about what is expected from us, and made me get even more excited about the next tasks. Is amazing that we can Skype nowadays. As I am in Germany, I can’t attend the Campus Sessions and getting connected with students and teachers through those Internet tools make me feel closer to everyone from this course.

After all, totally worth it joining the Skype Session. And I strongly recommend for anyone else who would like to have a better idea of the course!

Task 1d: Images

I confess that I am really bad at taking pictures from my performances experiences. I get a lot of complains about that, and I admit, I should change… But I still have some, and soon I will upload more photos from Ballet Dortmund.

I divided them into different albums: Ballet Dortmund, Past Performances and Audition Photos.

At the Audition Photos Album, I uploaded just some of them. Is possible to check all my audition pictures on my profile from network dance:

Task 1b: Professional Communication Technologies

It is incredible how communication has changed over the past few years and how fast this process happened. It is quite crazy to realize that when I was born, Internet was still in the beginnings. Nowadays, we are almost depending on Web 2.0 platforms. Facebook is my way to keep in touch with my friends (from my home country and abroad), keep updated about news from everywhere and about artists, companies that I follow. Google answers my questions and is the first place to go for a general research. YouTube allows me to get to know about artists, film makers, ballet dancers and dance companies works. Skype allows me to don’t feel so homesick, feel closer to my family members and friends, and now to be able to get in touch with members from this course as well. “Spotify” allows me to share my musics, follow my favourite singers and get to know new bands and artists. I am a loyal consumer from Amazon. After reading the “Reader 1” I discovered that even me, who is not really into technology and internet (I was the last one among my friends to have Facebook, Smartphone etc… I don’t have Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter) am actually totally part of the Web 2.0 concept and aware how this impacted my life.
Explaining in a simple way, Web 2.0 allows an interaction between the users of a platform in such a way that the creator and the reader both take part, share ideas, interact with each other and the more users access the site and add information to it, the better it becomes. So, if in the past the information was controlled by a certain group of editors, producers etc., this “new second-generation of web-based communities” (Reader 1) allows an interaction, debate and easy and accessible communication between the ones that post the information and the ones who read the same information, through this process create your own content, and even customize the way to share it.
The participation of the users present at the Web 2.0 platforms brought a huge impact on the professional networking practice. Nowadays is has become much easier the access from the dancers to companies, directors and any news from their work environment. To get in touch with companies sending emails, sharing pictures, documents and video links is a common practice. And it probably made the “dance world” even smaller. This whole new way of participation and interaction also changed not just the dancers’ promotion but brought a huge impact as well, on dance companies. Is possible to show and update their new performances, projects, dancers constantly and the barriers between the company and audience is reduced. I see many companies sharing rehearsals videos, backstage videos, interviews with dancers, directors, choreographers, promoting new performances…creating their Facebook pages and Twitter. The access to it achieves a wide range of people from anywhere in the world. The audience can collaborate, share, comment about the company. Valtysson (2010) calls this process as “prosumer”: “These interactive and participatory aspects of new media objects further erode the distinction between artists and audience and offer a model which has been termed the rise of the prosumer, i.e. the consumer is also a producer” (Valtysson 2010, p.205).
Here, at Theater Dortmund, the theater has its own Facebook page (which belongs to all sections of the theater) and a YouTube channel (one for the theater and one for the ballet company). Below there is the link for the Theater Dortmund’s Facebook page and I uploaded a video promoting “Drei Farben”, which was a new premiere of the theater this year. Soon I will also upload the promotion video for our next premiere “Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald”. Is also really nice that these videos are shown at Subway and Train Stations around the city:
Main website: www.theaterdo.de

YouTube channels:

Because Web 2.0 model is constantly being developed and replaced, materials are being reused and rearranged, is necessary to be extremely careful with what is posted at this public and so accessed place. Among the 1 billion users from Facebook, the 800 million users from YouTube, the 58 million tweets per day - in one second - some hundreds will have already seen or even shared the information posted. Maturity is required from users to recognize what should be shown.
However, even if is this whole new technology provides a revolutionary way of communication, I think we need to reflect the limits of it. What is explained as “collective intelligence” (Reader 1, Gruber 2007) also limits our engagement, once it offers just what it believes we would like to see. All those internet giants research our profile every day and limit our access to information of what belong to our “area of interest”. So, is it the internet totally democratic? Are we a big community or separated groups that share the same ideas and opinions? Is a bit scary to think that, maybe, one of those internet giants knows more about me than my family members. Debate and criticism is also necessary for further development and I believe is necessary a balance on this profile research. The necessity to be always connected nowadays is also something to think about. Communication can and must be developed but we can’t lose the sense of living the moment, interacting with physical people and respecting yours and the others privacy.

There are some articles about those issues and I really enjoyed this one:

This article is also nice, about “Global Audiences”: http://blog.hootsuite.com/ballet-companies-building-global-audience/

Task 1a: Professional CV

                                               Task 1a: Professional CV

The Curriculum Vitae is a way to give, to a potential employer, an overview about your qualifications, experiences, education and what more you believe would be interesting to present. In dance auditions, when usually hundreds of girls send their applications, I've always tried to make a short and clear CV, choosing the information that I believe would be appreciated by the Company. Depending on the repertoire and artistic vision of the company or other type of work or project, I adapt my CV. Also, when I send a cover letter to a Company, I make sure that it is formal and shows what interest me about the Company, trying also to present a bit of my qualifications.

As a CV changes according to where is presented – or posted - here at the Blog, I tried to make it more detailed. At the “About me” part of the Blog I tried to create a more casual and personal way to present myself. You can also check my Network Dance Profile which includes my CV and Audition/Dance Pictures as well: http://www.networkdance.com/user/home.php?uid=2867

So...let's begin!

After a week reading many blogs, the programme handbook, exploring the website, here I began finally, my blog. I am very excited about this course and I was quite glad to see that I am not the only one who struggled setting it up and is not really familiar with all this technology… Although, I believe that understanding how blogging, using networking tools impact in your professional practice, is one of the many reflections that this course will bring in the next days.

My decision to apply for a BAAP Course came straight after I graduated at my school, Elmhurst School for Dance (Birmingham, UK). As a dance student, I always enjoyed the reflection of how does the “performing arts world” work. I always tried to get a deep knowledge of dance not just as the activity but also on the history, cultural, individual and politic context. And after studying in different schools, and living in different countries, I realized how this “world” could change but also what makes all this performing arts keep connected and create a big community. For all my crazy, big reflections, I needed to understand and reflect about my own and the others workplaces, our involvement with this area, and share ideas.

At the moment I am really busy here at Theatre Dortmund, performing “Fantasia” and rehearsing for our next premiere "Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald" ("Tales from the Vienna Woods") which is on this month of February.  I will say the true that I got a bit scared with the amount of work and reading needed for this course...with the rehearsals, performances and taking care of a house, I got afraid to not be able to manage it. But thinking about it now, I got really glad to have the opportunity to reflect and share my ideas with many professionals and be part of this programme. I found the blogs and tasks so interesting that in the end, will be a really good way to chill my muscles…

I am really looking forward to network with you all and I wish all the best for us!
